For the fifth year running Children’s Hospital foundation in collaboration with the leading full service leasing and fleet management service provider Sixt Leasing are running a project „Let’s drive home!” which is actualised within the framework of Sixt social responsibility programme „Drying little tears”.
Children’s clinical university hospital is the major multilateral medical institution for children in Latvia. On average approximately 700 children from all country are undergoing a treatment in the hospital on a daily basis. Many children have to spend a long time in the hospital, even several months and their opportunities to get home are very limited due to both family financial difficulties and specific character of the illness. This problem affects the most the children of the Children’s hospital oncohaematology department because due to the low immunity children can not use the public transportation even when the doctor let’s them home.
Within the framework of the project, children who are allowed by the doctor to leave the hospital for a week or a weekend are taken home using the same car and by the same driver who is already popular with the children. This opportunity is important to the children and their parents because without this project many children who come from far- off districts of Latvia would not be able to get home during the time of illness which sometimes last even several years. Within the framework of the project for more than a year we are taking home children after serious operations to which it is not recommended to use the public transportation. On average 17 children are taken home every year, overall 30 times.
